Let’s talk about it

What to do when you encounter the error “Please configure the inventory detail in line # of the item list” when adding line items to a transaction type in NetSuite.
I often get this question from users, admins, developers, integration teams and, I have also encountered this error myself. I have most recently been asked about SuiteTalk Rest Web Services, SuiteScript 2.x, integration platforms, and even the NetSuite UI directly. Due to the volume of questions, I figure others might have questions as well. This error can happen in several scenarios.
What Is Inventory Detail?
Inventory Detail is a sub-record of the line items on transactions. It may be required on any transaction type that increases or decreases inventory counts in your system, depending on your settings and the item you have on the transaction line. Inventory Detail is used to indicate to NetSuite the exact details of which inventory item(s) the transaction line is dealing with and/or the very specific location within the warehouse these items will be coming from or going to.
Settings that MAY affect Inventory Details:
There is not one setting or group of settings that determines if Inventory Details will be needed at the transaction level. Inventory Detail is dependent on several settings within the NetSuite Instance and settings at the Item level. The following settings that may affect Inventory details can be found in “Setup Menu” → “Enable Features” and are the following:
Locations – are you tracking inventory, revenue, or expenses at the location level? Do you have multiple inventory locations?
Bin Management — Within your warehouse are any items tracked or counted in Rows, Shelves, Bins, or any other type of Named/Numbered locations in the warehouse?
Serialized Inventory — Are any of the items you buy, sell, or make serialized?
Lot Tracking — Are any of the items you buy, sell, or make lot-tracked?
Inventory Status — Inventory Status indicates if you have inventory in a location that is Not available for sale or has some other type of availability restrictions.
Item Specific Settings:
Based on the setting selected, when creating your items within the NetSuite Instance on EACH ITEM, it is possible and quite likely to have some items that require Inventory Details and some that do not in the same NetSuite instance and even in the same transaction.
If you are using multi-location inventory It is also possible to have a single item that in Location A requires Inventory Details and in Location B (within the same account) does not. Not only does it not require inventory detail but it cannot have inventory details.
It is also important to note that the required fields in the Inventory Details depend on several factors.
- System level: If Inventory Status is enabled in the NetSuite Account, then all items will require inventory details. –Status and Quantity will be required in this case.
- Item Types:
- Non-Inventory Items, Item Groups, and Service Items will NEVER require OR be allowed Inventory Detail unless Inventory Status is enabled.
- Inventory Items, Assembly Items, and Kit Items. MAY require Inventory Details when any of these are true.
i. Serialized Items
- Serial Number. – Required
- Quantity – Required
- Bin – Required if enabled
- Status — Required if enabled
ii. Lot Numbered Items

iv. Inventory Status is enabled

NOTE: If the item requires inventory Details you MUST supply them, if the item does not require inventory details you CANNOT provide them.
Conclusion
In order to fix the “Please configure the inventory detail” error, you need to carefully check your NetSuite instance settings, location configurations, and individual item details. Understanding the specific Inventory Detail requirements is essential for a smoother experience when adding line items to transactions and avoiding this error in the future. Always refer to the outlined requirements for each item type and pay attention to system-level settings that may affect Inventory Details.
